Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene announced her resignation on Tuesday following changes within the country's governing coalition.
Her departure triggers the formation of a new government. President Gitanas Nauseda now has 15 days to propose a candidate for prime minister.
The nominee must secure approval from the Seimas, Lithuania's parliament. Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the governing Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, is expected to receive the nomination.
If confirmed by parliament, Sinkevicius would have 15 days to form a cabinet and submit the new government's political programme. He would then receive another 15 days to present the full composition of the cabinet for approval.
The incoming coalition would be the third governing alliance assembled by the Social Democrats since the parliamentary elections held in late 2024.
The outgoing government had taken office the previous August after former prime minister Gintautas Paluckas resigned. Ruginiene's departure now begins another transition within Lithuania's governing structure.
