Venezuela and Chile have announced the beginning of a roadmap for the gradual normalization of their bilateral relations. The two governments set out the process in a joint statement.
The first stage will reactivate consular relations. Caracas and Santiago presented that step as the starting point for a possible full resumption of ties.
Restored consular work is intended to guarantee protection and services for Venezuelan and Chilean nationals residing in the other country. The initial measure therefore gives the diplomatic process an immediate practical function.
Both governments grounded the initiative in the historical friendship and Latin American solidarity that they say have connected the two countries since their emergence as republics.
The normalization process will be conducted through constructive dialogue and under principles of mutual respect, reciprocity and strict observance of international law. The statement establishes those rules for the gradual stages that may follow the consular reopening.
