Port City Colombo has attracted investment commitments valued at $2.19 billion, Sri Lanka's deputy minister of finance and planning Anil Jayantha Fernando told parliament. The figure measures the investment pipeline attached to the large development beside the capital.
The project operates as a special economic zone built on reclaimed land next to Colombo. Its physical location and dedicated status place it at the center of Sri Lanka's attempt to create a new urban and commercial investment district.
Fernando said the zone had received 176 investment proposals. That volume shows broad interest across the project, although proposals, approvals and finalized investments represent different stages of commitment.
Projects worth $336.67 million have been finalized. Authorities have also approved 54 investor applications during the current year, giving the zone a defined set of ventures moving through its authorization process.
The development has generated 9,871 employment opportunities and hosts three duty-free retail outlets. Those operating indicators provide an early measure of activity while the larger pool of proposed investment progresses toward completed projects.
